Fossil expedition
Fossil expedition
Fossil hunting on the Maasvlakte beach. Join a fossil expedition led by an experienced fossil hunter.
During this expedition on the Maasvlakte beach, fossil hunter Walter Langendoen explains (in Dutch) the search for archaeological and palaeontological treasures.
When new land was created with sand from the deep North Sea bed, these remains of ancient life ended up on the Maasvlakte beach. Walter lives in Hellevoetsluis and searches daily for fossils on the Maasvlakte beach. His collection now consists of thousands of finds including hyena droppings, mammoth bones, vole teeth and much more. During the expedition, Walter examines your discoveries so you know what you’ve found.
Get your boots on!
Before the expedition starts, participants receive a brief explanation of how to perform a fossil hunt. During the expedition, you walk on the beach and along the waterline. Put on boots or other suitable shoes. The tour lasts more than two hours. There are no restrooms on the beach, so please bear that in mind.
The fossil expedition is not suitable for very young children. In general, children from upper primary school onward should find it interesting enough. Still want to participate with young children? Then provide plenty of distractions. If you combine the fossil expedition with a visit to Portlantis, you’ll receive a 15% discount. The discount is automatically calculated at checkout.
